The new 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6

Hyundai wants to compete with the Tesla Model 3 and has introduced the Ioniq 6 sedan to go up against its better-known electric competitor. The Ioniq 6 will offer both single and dual motor configurations along with two battery pack options. It comes with an aerodynamic shape and with the more expensive 77.4-kilowatt battery pack, it should reach an estimated 361 miles of maximum driving range.

That number is a little below the average gasoline-powered car which provides 412 miles of range but it's impressive for an EV. Here's more about the new Hyundai Ioniq 6 sedan that's now available at Rowe Hyndai Auburn in Auburn ME.

Trim levels for the new Hyundai Ioniq 6

The new Hyundai Ioniq 6 offers buyers in Saco and Portland ME a total of four trims to choose from:

  • SE Standard Range
  • SE Long Range
  • SEL
  • Limited

The base-level SE Standard Range is the most affordable vehicle but its battery is small and its range is limited. It gives you two battery pack options and your choice of a rear-wheel drive single-motor configuration or an available dual-motor all-wheel drive version that adds quite a bit to the cost. The SE Long Range provides very good value and has the best range estimate of any model in the new Hyundai Ioniq lineup. If you want the SEL or Limited trim level, they are available only with the larger battery pack.

EV motor and performance

The Ioniq 6 is built on the same platform as the Ioniq 5 and their powertrains are mostly very similar. The base model Ioniq 6 can generate 149 horsepower with the single electric motor that powers the rear wheels. If you get a single-motor version with the Long Range battery pack, you'll bump up to 225 horsepower.

The 320-horsepower dual-motor versions are more expensive but they provide all-wheel drive with the help of front and rear electric motors and are available only with the larger battery. The more powerful configuration should move the Ioniq 6 from zero to 60 mph in about 5.1 seconds.

Driving range

According to the EPA, the new Ioniq 6 has a maximum driving range of up to 361 miles. The Ioniq 6 SE RWD Long Range gives you the most range that's available for this model. If you want the all-wheel drive Ioniq 6 Limited, you and your family will be limited to a range of just 270 miles. That's quite a bit below the the range you can get with a full tank in the average gasoline-powered car so buyers in Westbrook, Brunswick ME should take that into account.

Charging times

If you pay to have a 220-volt outlet professionally installed in your garage, you can get a complete 100% charge in about 9 hours and 35 minutes. If you can find a DC public fast charging station, you can reach an 80% charge level in about one hour. Even with a fast charge, of course, it's quite a bit less convenient than the five minutes it takes an Augusta ME driver to fill up a gas-powered car so that should be a part of your decision process. In addition, too much fast charging can shorten the life of your battery and create excess heat so it's something you should avoid.

Infotainment technology

Hyundai's larger electric vehicle comes with a standard 12.3-inch touch screen, smartphone connectivity, satellite radio and a six-speaker audio system. You can upgrade to wireless device charging and a Bose audio system with eight speakers. If you can live with the limited driving range and the long charging times, investigate the new Hyundai Ioniq 6 at Rowe Hyndai Auburn in Auburn ME.
